What Does It Mean to Truly Give?
Emma had a friend who was going through a difficult time. When she heard about it, she transferred some money to help cover a few unexpected expenses. Her friend thanked her, and Emma felt glad she could help.
A few days later, they spoke on the phone. Her friend began talking about what had been happening, but Emma was busy. She listened for a few minutes, promised to call again soon, and returned to her work.
That evening, she thought about their conversation. She had been willing to give money without hesitation, yet she had struggled to make time for a longer conversation.
The following weekend, Emma visited her friend. They sat together for hours, talking about some things and leaving others unspoken. Emma listened, asked questions, and stayed even when the conversation became uncomfortable.
When she left, her friend thanked her again. This time, Emma noticed something different in the way her friend said it.
On the way home, Emma thought about the two ways she had tried to help. Both had mattered, but they had asked something different of her.
