What Can We Learn from Successful People?
William had left high school before graduating and started working at a local supermarket. He enjoyed the work and got along well with his colleagues, but he knew he wanted to do more than stock shelves and help customers. One day, he hoped to become a store manager himself.
After a year on the job, William had his first performance review with his manager. When they discussed his future, he admitted that he wanted to work his way up to managing a store.
His manager didn't dismiss the idea because William lacked a diploma. Instead, he asked William what he thought a store manager needed to know.
William mentioned organizing staff, handling customer complaints, and keeping the store running smoothly.
“Those are part of it,” his manager said. “But there's more to learn than what you see on the shop floor.”
Over the following weeks, the manager began sharing advice with him. He explained how he planned staff schedules, dealt with difficult situations, and made decisions when several things needed attention at once.
William started paying closer attention. He noticed how his manager spoke to employees, how he responded when something went wrong, and how he remained calm during busy periods.
Sometimes, William asked questions. Other times, he simply watched and made notes after his shift.
