What Does It Mean to Fail?
Dan had always dreamed of living somewhere warm. Tired of the cold winters and gray skies at home, he decided to move to a tropical island. He imagined mornings in the sunshine, a slower pace of life, and the chance to start fresh somewhere new.
For the first few months, everything felt like an adventure. But over time, the practical challenges began to weigh on him. Finding steady work was harder than he had expected, and the cost of living was higher than he had planned for. Gradually, the life he had imagined became more difficult to sustain.
After two years, Dan returned home and moved back in with his parents while he figured out what to do next.
One afternoon, he ran into an old friend on the street.
“Well, look who’s back!” his friend said with a grin. “So much for island life. Didn't work out, did it?”
Dan smiled awkwardly. The comment stung, but he knew his friend wasn't entirely wrong. Things hadn't turned out the way he had hoped.
That evening, Dan began looking through the notes and documents he had kept from his time abroad. He wrote down what he had learned about finding work, budgeting, and preparing for a move.
Then he opened his laptop and started researching another place he had been considering.
